Us hardcore kids referred to them as brocore, shitcore, or fratfore. I was in high school when frat bros started going to real hardcore shows because they thought bands like this were hardcore bands. Boy was that fun. Pro tip: don't wear flip flop sandals if you plan on going to a hardcore show and acting tough. Someone will smash on your foot before punching you in the face. I saw a bro in a Hurley shirt get his eye literally punch out of his head at a show. It was amazing. Here are some hardcore bands for the musically confused.

Fuck, now I'm reminiscing about punching roided out jocks in the face. That confused look you get as someone passes out and can't believe they just got knocked out by someone half their size is priceless.

Sub-genres tend to get confusing, so I try to avoid them altogether. I know what you mean though. I always wore Docs to shows. I always get grumpy or pissed when I think about the fan base, so I just pay attention to the music itself, and anything after 'a deathgrip on yesterday' I tend to avoid.

Only time I've ever seen Docs at shows is when Madball comes to town and all the old DMS kids come out to play. They would probably kill people at an Atreyu show. I mean they would literally murder people attending an Atreyu show.

Haha yeah. It was either my work boots or running shoes. That would have been suicidal.

Vans and/or running shoes were pretty much standard footwear at hardcore shows from 2000-now. Before that mostly Sambas/Vans/Converse/big sneakers

Mostly skate shoes in my neck of the woods. My running shoes in particular had no protection on top, basically just a thin layer of cloth.
